Introduction To Nursing As a nurse, I have applied for the specialty area in Geriatric department. My expanded role in this specialty area will involve for understanding as well as treating the complex physical and mental health needs of older patients (Carol). This is required so that older patients can stay independent as well as active for longer time. The specialty area also helps in designing and explaining health care regimes to patients and the family members. The main role of nurses in geriatric department happens to be linking the families with community so as to provide for proper care to elderly members (Parke and McCusker, pp. 385-395). After completion of my educational program, I wish to provide my services to big hospitals. As a geriatric nurse, I tend to work with treatment teams that have to deal with large number of older patients. I would also like to offer my services to geriatric mental health (Rämö and Skålén, pp. 513-525). Here, my role would be to treat older patients that face psychiatric problems. I wish to manage the patient care starting from initial assessment to development, implementation and evaluation of care plan (Nay and Garratt). In the present times, I have been observing many persisting issues in the geriatric ward. At present, there is a presence number of aging population. This is increasing the overall burden of chronic conditions and disabilities on the geriatric departments of varied hospitals (Emerging Issues in Geriatric Care: Aging and Public Health Perspectives). he expanded role involves for helping the patients protect their health followed by coping up with the changes that happen in their overall mental and physical abilities (Boltz, Capezuti, and Shabbat, pp. 334 – 360).
